ABOUT MY HOME PAGE This is basically a guide on how to use my home page. I felt the reason for having this guide, was that some of the lists are particularly exhaustive. This page is in a constant change of flux (i.e. change). With hope this guide will remain, relatively the same. This is the guide for the different sections and links of this home page. My Home Page can also be accessed by going to http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~an363 (which is blackened due to the Blue Ribbon Campaign). The first page you will get to is the MAIN PAGE. This page is the base, where you can go to billions and billions (thanks to Carl Sagan) of places. The first link is to my new provider (ISP): Docusystems, other wise know as DurhamNet. The next link will take you to the Netscape Download Page. Here is where you can download the latest version of Netscape, which will make this page, far more interesting to view, not mention do a whole host of other things which can be done with the WWW on the whole. The latest version of Netscape is 3.0, which is a beta version (still in testing, but market ready), but other versions are available, here as well. The second link leads you to the download site of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE). Strangely enough this version, is version 3.0 as well. Many people are raving over IE, saying that it is better that Netscape-you can be the judge on that premise. This brings you to the main body of my site, and the first link is the page, which talks about me in VERY general terms: What I'm up to in my life, etc., you know the ob- ligatory narcissitic homage to myself. My Resume can be found here as well. Enough about me; the next page ...well you should know, since the next link, brings you here--to the How To/About page...Yes, THIS PAGE, where you can find out, what awaits you on other links. The next link brings you to the GUEST BOOK, though it is not manditory, I would strongly urge you to sign it. The guest book, also features the capability to look up who else has been there, and has links, where you can E-mail the person, or check out their own homepage (or yours). One important note about the Guest Book, you MUST fill out the first 3 entries, this however is manditory, you're only hindering yourself, if you don't. The next link is a Web Page devoted to the newest language to have an impact on the WWW: Java and JavaScript. The page is still a little bit buggy, but the links work perfectly, and they lead you to many web pages devoted to all things "Javaesque", where you see and download scripts and applets to use on your own page. It's quite good. The next page is under constant updating. It is devoted to anything and everything to do with Carleton University--My Alma Mater. There are links to all the student hompages, and various organizations which are affiliated with Carleton. As I said I don't have everything there, but I would like to; if anything is missing E-Mail me. Included there is a link to a page I designed on how to make forms and use the mailbot, with CHAT machine accounts. The next link is strangely scarce in traffic, especially since it has to with EMPLOYMENT RESOURCES, i.e. jobs. There are many links here which can get you to job listings, and remember: don't harass myself or any of the creators of the various pages, if you don't get a job via this resource. It's only a resource, not a cure-all. The next two links deal with public transportation in both Toronto, the GTA and Durham Region. The first link will take to the Web Pages of the Toronto Transit Comission (TTC) and GO Transit which operates buses and trains throughout the Greater Toronto Area. The Second Link deals with GO to a minor extent, and the transit services of Oshawa, Whitby, and Ajax-Pickering-I maybe missing somethings-but it deals with Durham Region public transit. There is then a bar of Links which is a list of useful util- ities, dealing with the local weather, time or other time zones. First in the next list of links, is the ARTS and MISCELLANY page, where you can travel to the Louvre (Paris is a beautiful city, if only the Musee D'Orsay would get a site) and peruse other artisitic sites, such as "banned" material and Fractals. Use can even play the game Lite Brite (remember?). You can also search out flags of other countries, and visit other cities. For this page, some form of GUI is essential. MUSIC PAGES are the most exhaustive page that is here. It is divided into sections which are devoted to concerts, then records com- panies, both big and indie, looking up music stations and shows, as well as accessing newsgroups. Lastly there is a huge bevy of music res- ources, where you can download soundbites, pictures, movies, etc. Next, there is a page devoted to POLITICS/GOVERNMENTS AND FINANCE. The fashion in which this page is divided is unusual. There are five parts to this page. The last part deals exclusively with Finance. Canadian major banks and stock quoters are in this page, as well as two currency converters. The first 4 sections deal with Politics and Government, based on geographic or national bases. The sections are: Canadian, American, European and Other Areas of the World. This page may look scant, but it's pretty interesting--(e.g. WhiteHouse, CIA and NASA stuff). The MEDIA PAGE, (or Publications, Libraries and Other Servers) is where you can visit the BBC, CBS and yes even CNN, as well as write to the Universities publications and access their libraries catalogues. You can get access to both Carleton University's library (CUBE) and University of Ottawa's library (Orbis) :-(, just for exmaple. I have added many other libraries, including University of Toronto's and the infamous Library of Congress, where we get our oh so wonderful cataloging system :,(. Yale, Cambridge and the University of Chicago's catalogues are also available, as well as many other Canadian Universities and even the North York Public system. Next you can telnet to mant other Freenets and servers, you can even see a list of Internet Service Providers (ISP) worldwide. REAL TIME CHAT RESOURCES is a link, which will lead you to a few real time talk servers, where you can talk to others on the net, live! Most of these are pretty reliable, but there are some which are quite unusual in both their subject matter and interfaces. This page is one of the most accessed pages in the Carleton domain, as well as receiving accolades for putting this page together. It seems as though a lot of people want to talk, out there. Some Netscape and America-On-Line users have had technical problems with these sites. Impromptu FAQs have been added to help solve these problems, including links to sites where Telnet Applications can be downloaded. The SPORTS and ASTROLOGY page, is a strange mix, but you can reach many sports sites, and the place where I show my allegiances, to various and mostly Toronto sports teams. There are some other great sport oriented sites, including TSN, Satchel, Fox Network and NerdWorld, which will be sure to slake the thrist of many sports enthusiasts. The Astrology page, takes you to alt.astrology newsgroup and various astrological/new age sites, where you can engage in seeing your horoscopes and all other information of that genre. I even have a page devoted to my (and actor James Woods') birthday, and an examination of my first name "John". Next is a page of WEB UTILITIES. This page has many "tricks" of the internet, which could be useful or useless (Useless Web Pages) to almost everyone. the 1st link (411) is a tool which can search out people's E-Mail addresses, by using a number of criteria (including your High School). There are also many search engines, such as Web Crawler, All-In-One, Lycos, Excite- Net and Yahoo and many others of that ilk. There are also refrential sites, where you can look up HTML and Java codes to Smiley's and Abbreviations, or even checkout Microsoft and Shareware locations. There are many FTP sites on this page, as well as how to send fakemail and get usenet news by E-Mail. Quite a useful pages for the technical savants. Then, some very important links. A link where an the progress of the Communication s Decency ACT (CDA) can be followed. It was passed by Congress, but ruled unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court...which means it is currently in limbo. The Next Link deals with the Blue Ribbon Campaign, which had an on-line petition to rally against Internet Censorship. If you want the Internet to remain free and raw (in it's current state), then I would urge you to click or hit return here, to read about this very important movement, to remain informed about this curtailment of freedom, and keep the 'net free and intact. Even better--copy down this site's address and add it to your own page, or ask your friends to put it on theirs. I can't say how important I feel about this umbrage against freedom. One of the last links COUNTDOWNs, in a unit of time of your choosing, to either the end of the millenium, or events of your choice. Very Interesting. I also have a link which takes you to the Bottom 95% of the WEb-a protest/comical movement which is opposing Point Communications 5% Top of the Web awards. I'll leave this link on until..I guess this page receives a top 5% award. Though it not a link I have put the live camera site shot of Queen and John streets in downtown Toronto, on the page, so you and I can see what's happening down there, by MuchMusic (you can see Speakers Corner) and CITY TV. Just hit the {reload} or {refresh} buttons on your browser to get a new view of downtown T.O. Sometimes they have other stuff happening on that camera feed... That's all for now, and remember this page can change at anytime... ENJOY!!!..... Happy to be of Service J. W.
