Good Day or Evening or whatever. I am an Aries Sun, Cap Moon
and Gemini Ascendant, being born on April 18th, in
Bedford, England kind of
helped that. Most of my family lives in West London.
I have lived the 3 most major cities in Canada, since my family
and I, moved to Canada before I was a year old. Spent less than a
year in Vancouver, Three years in Montreal, then the next 18 in Toronto...well Metro Toronto.
I am a Scarberian in exile. All my formative years were spent in
that centre of the universe or the hellish icon of suburbia..yes
you guessed it Scarborough,
Ontario. After my first year of University, my parents moved to Courtice,
Ont. just east of Oshawa, Ontario. Obviously I still have many
friends in Toronto.
Opinions by others coming soon!
My years at Carleton
have been the best, meeting all sorts of people and experiencing
many different experiences. Carleton is the best university
located in the capitol city of Canada:
Ottawa.
I have been through all levels (well..almost all) of Aca demic
gravity. Through these particular experiences I developed a
thrist for Politics and Academics. I combined those to in
becoming involved with the New University
Government (NUG), which led to my pursuing and attaining a
seat on the University
Senate. I received enough credits to graduate in Political
Science and History, in December of 1995. I received my degree on
June 13th, 1995. Being involved in student politics-here is a
link to the (gasp!)
Carleton University Students Association. Something that I
was only involved in, on a committee basis, and proxying once or
twice. I was also involved in many non-academic activities. One
of my ex-roomates maxims was "I came to Carleton to educate
myself, more than academically". I believe in that, and it
also makes you more of a balanced person, gives you that extra
something that employers or other of that ilk, may be looking
for, AND my most important reason to make LOADS of friends.
Orientation and the Foot Patrol, were
two of my most enthusiastically followed extra-academic
activities.
I guess, I really should take the time to describe what I do
presently. Currently I'm hopping on the band wagon of High-Tech
and IT, and starting my own business in this field. In my last
two years in University, I got started making Web Pages, and
seeing as how that this is a new medium of communications, I
decided that I could use my knowledge to enter into this lucrative
field. A friend of mine dismissed World Wide Web pages as a "fad",
but can you remember a time in history when a new evolution in
communications has ever been a fad, and just faded away: Radio is
still around, TV was dismissed as a fad as well, I think that the
Internet is in the same company, right now being dismissed as a
fad, by the more misanthropic of us, but it's here to stay, and
the best thing about it; right now it seems as though it really
can't be regulated, and most people who use it, are against
superflous and obtrusive advertising, which means the big corps
won't, be able to ram ads down our throats.
Yes, I design and create Web Pages, there is a link a little
further down the page, or you can just go to
John Wells Associates right...well you know where. Of course any
business is only as good as it's clientel, and of course that
clientel needs to be built. There are many ways to do this, but
by far the best and most accessible way is by means of business
organisations. The first one I heard about on CHEX a station here in Oshawa and Peterborough. They
mentioned that a business association was having a meeting in
Oshawa, so I went to it.
The Durham Home and Small Business Association was the name
of the group, and aside from networking, they also offer seminars
to their members and guests who want to improve their business.
That night a the key seminar, was by a woman who told us HOW to
network (the proper pressure in a firm handshake, to place your
cards separatly from the cards you received, how far away in a room
you should walk when you are finished talking with someome, and
to follow up on referrals and people who refer you at least once
every 6 mos)-it was the best. I fully intended to join, but wasn't
able to until later. The DHSBA meeting came first just by chance,
but I was already intending to join the
Oshawa/Clarington Chamber
of Commerce. This is a great organization, and the first meeting
I attended was their annual Wine and Cheese in October '96-that was
by far the biggest meeting I attended yet. I made the most contacts
for business, when I was asked to join a committee for the Chamber
and I thought it would be a great idea to get to know some chamber
people on a better level. I became a member of the Steering
Committee of the Corporate Challenge. The Corporate Challenge is
a day where all businesses get together and run through a series
of funny games. The GM Truckers
won the past 4 out of 5 years. The Durham Board of Education won
the Challenge this year.

My First client Bayberry's is right next door to the Whitby Chamber of Commerce, that plus one of the members of the Challenge Committee being a Past president made me decide to join that Chamber too. Another group, which is quite informal is the Clarington Business Group-this organization is one where your pay your money per meeting you attend. It's held in a small diner in Bowmanville, but it's been home to many vibrant meetings including the all candidates debate for Durham Riding in the last Federal Election.
