On a trip to Scotland ( can a person who has
actually set foot in Scotland still be considered a Brigadoonian? ) your humble
webmaster encountered a "Highland Laddie" making a display of rampant
Brigadoonery unlikely to be surpassed any time soon ...
Walking down the street in the Scottish town
of Callander was a man dressed in a truly amazing costume. His
bizarre garb might have been appropriate for a Hallowe'en party, but it
violated just about every rule of proper Highland Dress. Among the numerous
breaches of good taste (to say nothing of decency!) displayed by this one
individual:
He was wearing a hideous,
imitation " kilt " (probably a woman's skirt) that hung at least
six inches below the knees!
This strange garment was
fashioned of a predominantly white, "dress" tartan generally
reserved for a woman's evening wear or a little girl's Highland Dancing
outfit.
He wore an ordinary, blue
blazer (Saxon style, not a kilt jacket) that was much too long to be worn
with a kilt (even if he had been wearing a kilt).
He sported a tartan
necktie.
Perched on his head was a
Glengarry bonnet. This headgear looks good on military men, members of a
pipe band, or little boys playing soldier -- but not on a civilian.
He was wearing a silver
mounted, evening sporran in the middle of the day.
This decidedly informal
outfit was contrasted by white stockings, gillies (fancy shoes for formal
Highland Dress) and a jewelled sgian dubh suitable for
evening wear.
